The National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro) is a federal autarchy that was created for directing Brazilian companies to increase their productivity through the adoption of mechanisms aimed at improving the quality and safety of products and services.

Compulsory Certifications are imposed by Ordinances issued by Inmetro, stating that a company can only commercialize or produce some specific products, if them have already been duly certified according to these ordinances.
